we all seek closure...we all seek justice, but who should we be when justice is served, when we receive the closure we so longed for.
let's recall an image from our very recent past. i remember sitting in my living room crying, watching the news coverage after the towers fell. watching as people in certain countries gathered in public places and cheered at the devastation, the destruction, the death. i remember feeling the heartbreak for all those lives lost, and the unimaginable vulgarity and evil of those celebrations. i remember the outcry from the media, from america wondering how they could be so cold, so jubilant in the face of one of our nation's greatest tragedies. i wondered that as well.
flash forward to yesterday, when the news broke that osama had finally been killed. the closure we had all been searching for right there on our t.v. screens. mission accomplished! ...and then drunken images from times square, with chants of USA USA, and i can't help but think, we have to be better than this. now more than ever, with the world is watching, who do we want to be? i am speaking for myself alone, but to me the celebrations witnessed on t.v. yesterday, were every bit as vulgar as the celebrations that took place on the day the towers fell.
...i would have hoped that this would be the opportunity for the solemn closure that we all longed for. for the justice of the loved ones who are lost. i would have hoped this would be our chance to rise above.
